Music

The premise of this thread is that people - all people - enjoy listening to music. Thinking about possible reasons for why there has been no response to this thread (and a recent conversation on CTZ about the role of experience) lead me to a startling discovery - not everyone does. There’s a technical term for it: musical anhedonia.

”Musical anhedonia is a neurological condition characterized by an inability to derive pleasure from music. People with this condition, unlike those suffering from music agnosia, can recognize and understand music but fail to enjoy it. … Its incidence in the general population is low: between 3% and 5%.”

My music appreciation teacher didn’t mention it. I wonder now if she even knew about it. I didn’t until this morning.
