The natural mind vs. the spiritual mind

We are told in scripture, that which is first is not spiritual, but is natural. We are also told, the first man is of the earth and is earthly. And this first man speaks of the earth, only knowing what he knows naturally. This also speaks to the carnal mind verses the spiritual mind, and the spirit that is in the world verses the Spirit of God. Just as it is written, man knows the things of man by the spirit of man that is in him. Even so the things of God no man knows, but the Spirit of God. So in order to know and understand the spiritual things of God, we need to have the Spirit of God working in us, giving us eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is saying in God’s written words.

We are told the natural man receives not the the things of the Spirit of God, and neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned. So those who are of the world, and those who are of the spirit of this world, will not receive the spiritual things of God because they are yet carnally minded. It is written, to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is Life and peace. So the spirit that is in the world works death in them, but the Holy Spirit works Life in us. Just as it is written, greater is He who is in you, than he that is in the world.

The natural man only knows what he can see, hear, and feel in the natural world, and often judges by outward appearances. But the invisible spiritual things of God he cannot see, nor can he understand, neither will he believe them being blinded by the spirit that is in him. Like worldly men of science, who the world holds in high regard as wise men; these are really nothing more than fools in God’s eyes, because they do not believe in the invisible God.

A good example of how the natural man sees things, and how God sees things is shown in the conversation between Jesus and the Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus. When Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again in order to see the Kingdom of God, Nicodemus replied, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?” Nicodemus knew nothing of a spiritual birth from above, he only knew of natural child birth. It is much the same with those who are of the spirit of this world, they only know what they know naturally.

So this carnal mindset is not limited to the secular world, as many who claim to be born again Christians are still under this carnal condition, being yet in the flesh and unable to receive the spiritual things of God. These carnal Christians have often been taught by other carnally minded men, therefore having been taught by the wisdom of this world, and not by the Wisdom that only comes from God; they also remain brutish in their understanding into the spiritual things of God.

God made foolish the wisdom of this world. In order to understand the many mysteries found in God’s written words, you need to receive the Wisdom that only comes from God. And this Wisdom is not achieved by going to schools and Universities, or Bible college, or church services, or watching videos. This Wisdom cannot be taught by carnally minded men, neither can it be learned by carnally minded men. This Wisdom is a gift from God given to His elect saints who believe in His Word Jesus Christ and are born again of His Spirit. It is only by the Spirit of God that a man can receive understanding into the deep spiritual things of God.

If any man lacks Wisdom let him ask of God in faith. Peace and God bless

Notice below how Paul shows the difference between the 2 different spirits and the 2 different wisdoms. One of the world, the other of God’s Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:4-14

King James Version

4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

modern English is easier to read and more accurate:

4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[a]—
the things God has prepared for those who love him—

10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[b] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
