US pastor has 'no intention' of stopping Koran bonfire

Terry Jones says he doesn't think backing down is the "right thing"

A US pastor says he is not "backing down" from plans to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11, despite international outrage. "We are not convinced that backing down is the right thing," said Terry Jones of 50-member Florida church, the Dove World Outreach Center. The group's plan has sparked condemnation from Muslim countries, Nato and the top US Afghan commander.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the plan "disgraceful". On Monday, General David Petraeus, the top US commander in Afghanistan, warned troops' lives would be in danger if the church went through with its bonfire. The US Attorney General, Eric Holder, called the idea "idiotic and dangerous".

But organizer, Pastor Terry Jones said on Wednesday that his plan to burn the Islamic holy book is intended to draw attention to his belief that "something's wrong."
"It is possibly time for us in a new way to actually stand up, confront terrorism," Mr Jones told reporters. He acknowledged Gen Petraeus' concerns, but claimed to have been contacted by a special forces officer who told him US troops were supportive of his plan. "So on September the eleventh we shall continue with our planned event."
The Dove World Outreach Center may only represent a handful of people, but its incendiary plans haven't emerged out of nowhere.

The role of Islam in America has become a hot button issue with social and political implications. While most Americans would probably take issue with exhortations to burn the Koran, there is clearly widespread concern about the influence of Islam. Protests over the planned location of an Islamic centre close to Ground Zero in New York, and similar controversy in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, have highlighted popular anxiety about Islam in America.Earlier this year, an opinion poll found that 53% of Americans view Islam unfavourably, with only 42% viewing the religion favourably. Reports about young American Muslims being radicalised on the internet have helped to stoke fears about the nature of a religion indelibly associated, since 9/11, with a violent assault on the US. Far from subsiding over time, anxiety seems to have deepened. As a result, American Muslims say they feel more isolated than at any time since the 2001 attacks. The controversy comes at a time when the US relationship with Islam is very much under scrutiny.

There is heated debate in the country over a proposal to build a mosque and Islamic cultural centre streets from Ground Zero, site of the 9/11 attacks, in New York.
Gen Petraeus said on Monday that the bonfire could cause problems "not just in Kabul, but everywhere in the world". "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems," he said in a statement. Pastor Jones - author of a book entitled Islam is of the Devil - has said he understands the general's concerns but that it was "time for America to quit apologising for our actions and bowing to kings".

The Vatican, the Obama administration and Nato have also expressed concern over the plan. Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen blasted the plans, telling reporters that burning Korans violated the Nato alliance's "values". Muslims consider the Koran to be the word of God and insist it be treated with the utmost respect. Any intentional damage or show of disrespect to the holy book is deeply offensive to them. An interfaith group of evangelical, Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim leaders meeting in Washington on Tuesday condemned the proposals as a violation of American values and the Bible.

I think this should be posted although I'm still working through my opinion of it. On one hand I see the outrage of many ... on the other hand ... no one is hurt when a book is burned and I am concerned about sharing a land with people who might react in a violent fashion when a "book" is burned. :):

I imagine if someone took the Bible and burned it ... it wouldn't bother me a bit. I suppose when you read the central character of the Bible was crucified, that tops anything that might be done to a book concerning Him.

I hope that cooler heads prevail but must say I am curious as to how this will play out and as said, "it is only a book." The message of that book is not in jeopardy and as said, I am more concerned about the reaction to it being burned than any damage done to the message of Islam. :):

There is (in my opinion) an underlying thought in everyones mind concerning Islam and it's ultimate goal. There is well grounded suspicion that the West is not held in very high regard by even moderate Muslims in Islamic countries or in America. (open for debate)

Journeys to Saudi Arabia by Barbara Walters and the unkind reception she received by so called moderate Islamic Scholars has been well documented. What is being taught to moderate Islamic children concerning the "Christian" west is also well documented. The comments by the leaders of many Islamic countries are well documented and the myriad of anti-west protests (again Islamic) are well documented in all media formats.

So ... I am not convinced that Islam in general in America is a totally benign entity. I guess we will see in the near future what they are really made of. :):

I find this site amazing. With Wind's post on the inflated price of oil I got to thinking what a short time we have had mass produced automobiles. Shorpy does a good job of documenting this ... and the "attitudes" expressed by the people driving them or just sitting in them is enlightening. :D

The photo's of the Civil War and and others dating back into the 1860's are spell-binding and a window into that time.

all settled in here now.
thank you all for the prayers for this!

one of my dh's brothers wants to build a relationship with him.
they have been estranged for years. we've had a couple bbq's with them this last summer.
the brother thinks his mom is a saint. (said that to me a few yrs ago when the other bro passed on) their mom is into wof and is like a bull dog, pushy, lieing, coniving. ect.
this has come out in this last year glarinly. truly I think he'd would have a breakdown if he took a good look at things.
also, they have a spook in their house, thinking its his wifes dad.
to which dh said NO, its a demon. they dont like to hear that.
please pray for this whole situation. and that they would find Jesus as their savior and the true gospel!

for my mil, that somehow the "spell" (if one wants to call it that) would be broken over her,
and the family, with this cultic demonic wof somehow.

for my sil, I've heard thru the kids that her dh just went under open heart surgery.
she sits and crys and drinks, she is a alcoholic.
she also, into wof.
please pray she'd hear and recieve in her heart the true gospel and be saved.

dh's family has "family" as god. which is destroying them all...

for my sons that they would heed the word of God! and not just think on it but get up and
do it and repent.

for my extended family, oldest son ran into mom at the grocery store a few days ago.
she acted like his best friend. she has this what dh calls a white light over her.
I call it charm. people get fooled very easily with her.
please to pray for her and my sisters salvation, and that this mess that was created years ago, with my dad would finally be resolved and put to rest. it has split everyone, created tension, lying, and nothing but problems for them to keep the lie going.

to which I have been battling a migraine...

please pray the migraine would leave and I would'nt worry about it.
I dont trust my mom at all!

thanks! I know this is a bit lengthy.
our time is short.

may the Lord have mercy and pull them all into the fold.

Interesting . my my my

http://amlibpub.blogspot.com/2006/12...ssil-fuel.html

The forthcoming issue (Dec. 8) of the scientific journal Nature will contain an article that abundant quantities of methane have been conclusively shown to exist on Titan, one of the moons of Saturn. “We have determined that Titan's methane is not of biologic origin," reports Hasso Niemann of the Goddard Space Flight Center, a principal NASA investigator. Methane, a key hydrocarbon and the principal component of natural gas, actually has been found throughout the solar system. If methane can be produced by an abiotic (or abiogenic) process, so can more complex hydrocarbons. Once you have methane, “the rest is easy,” says Stanford Penner, Ph.D.

Dr. Penner, who is an authority on the Second Law of Thermodynamics, notes that Russian and Ukrainian scientists have produced an elegant proof that abiotic oil production (from intense pressure and high temperatures at least 100 kilometers below the earth's surface) is entirely consistent with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, but that no such proof has ever been put forth for the fossil fuel theory. In fact, he states that there is no “fossil fuel theory,” merely a hypothesis for which no proof has ever been set forth.

Furthermore, oil has been discovered in the earth's Archeozoic rock formations. These are the most ancient of rocks, which were formed before any plants or animals existed on earth. So petroleum here must have had an inorganic origin, rather than being produced from dead dinosaurs and ancient forests, as is commonly believed.

Finally, some older oil wells previously regarded as depleted have been known to be replenished from below. This is certainly evidence that oil is being produced at depths in the earth (where there are no fossil remains) and being pushed upward by intense pressure from below. The best example of this is Green Island in the Gulf of Mexico. When all the oil that could profitably be extracted had been pumped out, the wells there were closed and forgotten about. Then, twenty years later, those wells were found to contain more oil than before any had been removed! If petroleum is constantly produced by an inorganic process, we are never going to run out of oil.

All of which shows that political policies based on the idea that the world is running out of oil are based on a false theory. Just like claims about man-made global warming ruining the earth (see our new chart on global warming). Both ideas depend on “consensus,” a popular belief that prevails because of constant repetition rather than scientific proof.

So for the longest time I've been a very shy and introverted guy. But I don't want to be this. I want to be the guy who is always having fun, who always has somebody their for him. I've asked God for help in this area so much but he seems not to want to budge any. And yesterday I found out 2 of my closes friends I will ever have lost their virginity (not to each other) but ever since then I found out I've been angry with God. How come God can't give me just the words to speak so I can make friends and that I could get a girl friend and then someday a wife? I think I'm doing everything right, I pray, and read the bible almost daily, but it seems like God is mad at me. Is it too much to ask for social skills... I feel alone half the time. I barely have any friends and the ones I thought i do have they just seem to ignore me. And when ever I ask for a sign from God for what I'm supposed to do next in life, nothing happens. What's wrong? Is God mad at me? Why wouldn't God want his people to strive in his world? I really feel he is leaving me.

BBC 2 September 2010 Last updated at 04:18 ET

Stephen Hawking: God did not create Universe:

There is no place for God in theories on the creation of the Universe, Professor Stephen Hawking has said.

He had previously argued belief in a creator was not incompatible with science but in a new book, he concludes the Big Bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.

The Grand Design, part serialized in the Times, says there is no need to invoke God to set the Universe going.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something," he concluded.

'Planetary conditions'

In his new book, an extract of which appears in the Times, Britain's most famous physicist sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not have sprung out of chaos.

Citing the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun, he said: "That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions - the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass - far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings."

He adds: "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

The book was co-written by US physicist Leonard Mlodinow and is published on 9 September.

In his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time, Prof Hawking appeared to accept the role of God in the creation of the Universe.

"If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we should know the mind of God," he said.

Alright I was listening to a talk radio the other day about Christians in doing good deeds and how many are doing these good things but not saying why they are doing it... in the name of Jesus, they are waiting for someone to say "Hey what drives you to do this good thing or be nice".

To add my own 2 cents we see Athiest pushing towards good deeds to, I don't know their trying to prove you can do good deeds without being a Christian....:swoon:... my own oppinion, no back bone it will fall.

So anyways back to this radio talk; they continued on talking about how its our mission to let all know why us Christians are doing the good deeds, but went on to say depending where you are in the world you may not be allowed to have freedom of speach to say so.

But I say most of these people that are waiting to be asked aren't in these places.

I don't have much of my own oppinion on this yet except for a good point was pointed out by someone else " Jesus didn't feed the 5000 just to supply food to hungry mouths but he fed out of compassion and his goal wasn't to feed but was to teach." I thought this was a good converstaion topic and wanted to talk about it.

Dan 2:41 "In that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have in it the toughness of iron, inasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with [fn] common clay.

Dan 2:42 "As the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong and part of it will be brittle.

Dan 2:43 "And in that you saw the iron mixed with [fn] common clay, they will combine with one another [fn] in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine

(this is the nasb above)

what/who is the feet/toes/ ect. and then in v. 43 it says they wil combining with one another in the seed of men .

what does that mean?

and we might be offline sometimes soon, but will be back as soon as things get moved.
