I'm reading a commentary on the Book of Job. The author is using the New Revised Standard Version.
One passage that he uses is the following
Job 41:9-11
9* (javascript:void(0);)Any hope of capturing it* (javascript:void(0);) will be disappointed;
were not even the gods* (javascript:void(0);) overwhelmed at the sight of it?
10No one is so fierce as to dare to stir it up.
Who can stand before it?* (javascript:void(0);)
11Who can confront it* (javascript:void(0);) and be safe?* (javascript:void(0);)
—under the whole heaven, who?* (javascript:void(0);)
which differs from most other versions which say...
Job 41:9-11 (New International Version)
9 Any hope of subduing him is false;
the mere sight of him is overpowering.
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse him.
Who then is able to stand against me? 11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?
Everything under heaven belongs to me.
Job 41:9-11 (New King James Version)
9 Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false;
Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him?
10 No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up.
Who then is able to stand against Me? 11 Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him?
Everything under heaven is Mine.
The 'one' in verse 9 is in italics meaning it has been added for clarity.
Is there any justification for 'the gods' in verse 9
and 'stand before it' as opposed to 'stand before me' in verse 10?
That's not just a minor difference in wording but changes the meaning entirely, imo.
Hope you can help me with this one.
