Do I have the basic definitions of these three words right?

Teacher- to teach or give knowledge

Prophet- one who gets messages from God i.e. future events

Evangelist- One who spreads the Word and spreads the Gospel/ The Good News

I ask because in the Bible in the NT it says at least 4 times or more that a woman is not to teach man. But my MIL (who is almost a pastor; done with school and a feminist) argues that women in the Bible were prophets, yes true. Conversation between us has never come up but if it does I need to have my understanding straight. Prophets aren't teachers... right? They have separate meanings. And an evangelist is also not a teacher but one who simply spreads the good news... right?

That is basically right. Can be cross overs, like the Apostles where evangelists, teachers and prophets. The title goes with the primary function.

Yes, there were/are women prophets. But Biblically they are under the authority of male leader, not independent. And prophet means all from revelation of divinely given information regardless of being prophetic or otherwise.
