Romans 12:19
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written(in the Old Testament I take it), Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Seems like I have seen this reference in the Old Test., but with a different phrasing.

Does anyone know what reference Paul is referring to?

First get it out of the Old English no one speaks any more.
19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[a (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=romans%2012:19&version=31#fen-NIV-28250a)]says the Lord.
Deuteronomy 32:35 (New International Version)

35 It is mine to avenge; I will repay.
In due time their foot will slip;
their day of disaster is near
and their doom rushes upon them."

Both are referring to the evils people and nations do. Let God take the revenge there.

But understand, in the Bible justice, self defense and revenge are three distinctly different issues that are dealt with differently. Justice and self defense are endorsed and promoted, revenge is not.

What's the difference between justice and revenge?

What message does each send?

What do each hope to gain?

What's the difference between justice and revenge?
Justice is fair, impartial and based on a legal standard. Revenge is personal and does not have to be fair, impartial or based on a legal standard.

Justice must be fair but revenge does not.

What message does each send?
Justice says one will be treated fairly and equal measure to others committing the same offense after proving the offense.

Revenge is not equal, may not be just and is determined by emotion, not fairness.

What do each hope to gain?
Justice a fair outcome for being harmed. Revenge a sense of self satisfaction from lashing out at one who wrongs you in an often unfair manner.
