View Full Version : Independents' Frustration

A frustration for Independents and a cause of false party numbers is how many elections are conducted.

In example, there are only Republican and Democrat primary ballots, in my state. You have to sign for on party or the other. You cannot mix voting. If a run off you automatically get what you signed for the first time.

That means you are counted as a member of the party whose ballot you used in the primaries.

But that bears no resemblance to how people may vote in the election and it limits choices in all the elections.

In truth, most primaries attract extremely few voters, yet they are held up as indicators of who will win the general election, not to mention they determine who you can actually vote for in the general.

The system is wrong and broken.

would'nt the media have a lot to do with this?

they bolst the one they want, give coverage, use what you are talking about and run with it...

giving false impressions to the people?

Yes.

And the parties controll the political discourse and options far more than many people realize.

As in my County, the Dems are so few in numbers they have no impact, the Republican have a small party and try to dictate who runs for municipal and and County office. Conservative Independents are the majority.

On the city side we have non partisan, meaning all on one ticket, elections, which is great! Our city has two strong Republicans, who can go away at any time, one weak Repulican, a great guy, a woman I cannot figure out and an Independent, who is strongly conservative.

County is partisan, so you get forced to declare as a party member to run.

My point is no one cares about party in our city, which is 1/3 of the County. It is all about positions and not answering to 'party chiefs.'

I know for a fact our unpopular mayor wanted to run for a state position but the Republican Party told him forget it. And that should not be their call no matter how unpopular he is.

The Parties should not set the agendas about who will lead, as they do now.

Try studying history. There have been several 3rd parties with some becoming the new main parties.
