In Lakeland Florida, a revival called the “Florida Outpouring” is taking place that is along the same vein as the revivals of days gone by of Rodney Howard-Browne, and the Pensacola Outpouring.
The revival in Florida, which was supposed to last only one week, has now passed forty days, and is still going strong. At the center of this revival is Todd Bentley. Mr. Bentley is a young and relatively new face on the scene. Let’s get acquainted with his doctrine.
So-called “Holy Ghost revivals” are nothing new. We’ve seen them before, and the foul fruit that they have produced. This new revival is no different. Bentley is part of the signs and wonders crowd who go about preaching signs and wonders. But what about his doctrine? What does he teach?
A very troubling facet of his ministry is his fascination with angels. Bentley has written an article entitled, “Angelic Hosts.” He teaches that you can release angels to fulfill God’s word (as if they are subject to us in the first place).
Bentley says:
Today I want to focus the teaching on the angelic realm and how you can release angels to fulfill God’s word. Recently, I had several daily visitations of angels which lasted for weeks. Since the beginning of this year I’ve also sensed an increase in the presence of angels in our meetings. Many others have reported to me of increase of spiritual activity in their lives too. During a meeting in Salt Lake city, I had a vision in which a hole opened up in heaven and I saw an open-eye vision of angels of God ascending into heaven and descending into the service, bringing eyes and wings (the seer anointing). (emphasis mine) Source.
The seer anointing? I’m trying to think of scripture and reference for that, yet there doesn’t seem to be any. What I find to be the most ridiculous thing is that he actually gives these angels names. Among them are: Healing Revival, and Emma; he also says that there are angels of Finances and Breakthrough. Yet again, I find no scriptural support for this lunacy.
For a description of the angel Emma, please read the following account written by Bentley himself:
Now let me talk about an angelic experience with Emma.
Twice Bob Jones asked me about this angel that was in Kansas City in 1980: “Todd, have you ever seen the angel by the name of Emma?” He asked me as if he expected that this angel was appearing to me. Surprised, I said, “Bob, who is Emma?” He told me that Emma was the angel that helped birth and start the whole prophetic movement in Kansas City in the 1980s. She was a mothering-type angel that helped nurture the prophetic as it broke out. Within a few weeks of Bob asking me about Emma, I was in a service in Beulah, North Dakota. In the middle of the service I was in conversation with Ivan and another person when in walks Emma. As I stared at the angel with open eyes, the Lord said, “Here’s Emma.” I’m not kidding. She floated a couple of inches off the floor. It was almost like Kathryn Khulman in those old videos when she wore a white dress and looked like she was gliding across the platform. Emma appeared beautiful and young-about 22 years old-but she was old at the same time. She seemed to carry the wisdom, virtue and grace of Proverbs 31 on her life.
She glided into the room, emitting brilliant light and colors. Emma carried these bags and began pulling gold out of them. Then, as she walked up and down the aisles of the church, she began putting gold dust on people. “God, what is happening?” I asked. The Lord answered: “She is releasing the gold, which is both the revelation and the financial breakthrough that I am bringing into this church. I want you to prophecy that Emma showed up in this service-the same angel that appeared in Kansas city-as a sign that I am endorsing and releasing a prophetic spirit in the church.” See, when angels come, they always come for a reason; we need to actually ask God what the purpose is. Within three weeks of that visitation, the church had given me the biggest offering I had ever received to that point in my ministry. Thousands of dollars! Thousands! Even though the entire community consisted of only three thousand people, weeks after I left the church the pastor testified that the church offerings had either doubled or tripled.
During this visitation the pastor’s wife (it was an AOG church) got totally whacked by the Holy Ghost- she began running around barking like a dog or squawking like a chicken as a powerful prophetic spirit came on her. Also, as this prophetic anointing came on her, she started getting phone numbers of complete strangers and calling them up on the telephone and prophesying over them. She would tell them that God gave her their telephone number and then would give them words of knowledge. Complete strangers. Then angels started showing up in the church.
I believe Emma released a financial and prophetic anointing in that place. That was the first angel that I have ever seen in the form of a woman. Some angels I’ve seen seemed like they were neither male nor female. However, Emma appeared as a woman who was like a Deborah, like a mother in Zion. When she came, she began to mentor, nurture and opened up a prophetic well. The people in the church began having trances and visions and the pastor began getting words of knowledge and moving in healing. That congregation also saw more financial breakthrough than they had ever seen before. Source (http://www.etpv.org/2003/angho.html).
The angel, Emma, is the angel which Bentley says Bob Jones claims birthed the prophetic movement. According to Bentley, she is a nurturing, mothering-type angel who nurtures the “prophetic” as it breaks out (see above quote). There is no scriptural support for this claim. However, scriptural precepts don’t seem to be important to Bentley. What was the result of Emma’s visitation? Money. He got more money in those meetings than he had ever received before in his ministry up to that point. So, this is the fruit of Emma’s visitation? Money? What about preaching Christ and Him crucified? What about preaching that we are no longer under the curse of God’s wrath because Jesus DRANK the cup of His wrath? What about repentence, obedience, faith? Aren’t those necessary in a child of God’s life? Apparently not as much as money.
In the above quote, Bentley said: “During this visitation the pastor’s wife (it was an AOG church) got totally whacked by the Holy Ghost- she began running around barking like a dog or squawking like a chicken as a powerful prophetic spirit came on her. “ (emphasis mine)
She got “whacked by the Holy Ghost” and as a result……… she began barking like a dog and squawking like a chicken? Is this the way in which the Holy Spirit works? According to Bentley it is, but not according to scripture. When God spoke through the prophets of old, the evidence that the Spirit was speaking through them wasn’t manifest through barking and squawking. They passed the test of a prophet - they were 100% accurate and everything they prophesied came to pass.
Let’s consult scripture and see what it says about the Holy Spirit. The sixteenth chapter of John will tell us all we need to know:
John 16:13-15:
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
14 “He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you.
15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.
According to this scripture passage, the Holy Spirit will take what He hears, and He will relay it to us, or speak it to us. Now, I ask you, do you think the Holy Spirit heard God bark like a dog or squawk like a chicken and relay it to this pastor’s wife? Or did God tell the Holy Spirit to tell her to carry on in that fashion? Prepostorous!!!
I am praying that those who are attending this revival would awaken, rightly divide the Word of Truth and turn away from this. Please understand that the “entities” or angels that are visiting Todd Bentley are not angels of the Most High God. They are demonic. You need look no further than the doctrine and messages they deliver to him to see this.
