When somebody says, "Do you think I am going to Hell?" and you think they are, you say something like, "Well, I believe in justice, do you?" "Yes." "What is justice but that people who are guilty get punished in an appropriate way to their guilt? I believe that people who are guilty pay for their crimes unless they have been pardoned."
This is very straightforward language. It fits entirely with our culture. It is terminology that has meaning immediately. It is also terminology that the person you are talking with not only is familiar with but they agree with the concept. We both believe the same thing here: justice. If you have committed any moral crimes, if you have done anything wrong, I think you will be punished for them unless you receive pardon. The punishment for moral crimes is Hell.
One of the clearest explainations I have heard recently.

thanks for sharing this!
I know for a fact without Jesus paying for my sin, I'd be in hell.
to many today know nothing of justice!

It is a good one for all to understand but it wouldn't work for those that think they just need to be good people no matter what their religion or beliefs. And than they think that God is cruel because they are good people and would go to Hell just because they don't necessarily accept Jesus. The thing is, is that they DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT JESUS DID FOR US, what God did for us. They might hear but they don't take it in because they feel their feelings are hurt. This is an example of where our hearts are so deceiving and Satan plays with them.
Gods justice will be the True justice and what He decides or says for my own self will be right and true; perfectly with His wisdom. Too many know nothing about justice because they know nothing about the True God.

Then the concept needs to be expanded for them in regards to true justice.
You cannot logically commit a moral crime against an eternal God and not expect to receive and eternal punishment for it, especially if He has provided a pardon for you to escape that punishment.
It wouldnt be justice regardless of how they "feel" about it.
If they reject after that or make up excuses about cruelty then have them try and explain a more just concept of "god". It will usually turn out to be the most unjust thing you've ever heard of.

Comparing the loving and just God of the bible to what their imaginations dream up is always interesting to hear.
Dont let them resort to "well the God of the bible is cruel." There are reasons behind the justice he dishes out, always. They are just reasons even if they are unwilling to see or accept them. In all cases God has done what is just and right and true and ultimately loving.
They may say "How is it loving to send someone to Hell?" Well the reality is that God allows you to choose your own path. Each path has a consequence. They are both eternal.

Justice and punishment are quite different. Punishment can satisifed an ego and help correct someone's actions, but; Justice is like a final placement. Karma is the best synanym for Justice I can think of. Although Karma is unrealistic on earth, on Judgement day in Heaven, it'll occur. We all have a fair chance and choice to go to heaven or hell. Free will. Like core said, we chose the path. That's pretty justful and loving. God even gave us the directions.
God did everything he could for us, even paid our bail in full. So the only unjust people are ourselves, or will we sign that check. You can even be scientfic about the concept: Absolute is inevitable. Thus: Running away, or argueing how your pride feels, doesn't change reality. God is just.
