James 2:14-26 (NIV Version)

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," But does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that- and shudder.

You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, " and he was called God's friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

After reading this scripture I had some thoughts come to my mind about people who do shout abouts for their deeds. Now an obvious one is selfish ambition. But I am not so sure that is always the case why people do this. Could it be maybe they are feeling guilt ridden and use the deeds to shout about so they can ignore and hope others will ignore their sins, like unsettled or running away from something? Or guilt ridden because Satan is trying to tell them no matter what they are never good enough? Or could it be they are feeling a lack of faith so they do more deeds to say "Hey people I do have strong faith see". As scripture says "You have faith and I have deeds". ( that could go two ways, I have one and you have the other, or, you have talked about faith but my faith is proof because I act).

On the other side we do see so many church goers who talk as they are doing so good at the same time their neighbor sits next to them and starve. Just like the scripture says "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed". Now for a Christian to act in such a manor is just plain cold.

Just some thoughts I pondered upon while reading this. And for the record we should always think of others higher than ourselves , in this I mean with what scripture teaches us. And we should never boast; boasting is for the prideful. Love is for the humble.

For most it is pride. Christ spoke of those would stand before him and declare their works as making them deserving of salvation.

Such do all for them, not Christ. They are their own gods and declare their own glory.

No guilt, but the sin self they are so prideful about.

well said..

you have a gift for writing clearly!

I've wondered, is it works salvation, loving preminence? (why folks do these things)

for your first paragraph, such indifference!
I have seen first hand and would if I went back...
so cold and cruel.

and pointless.... all about self.... not the Lord and His word.

Lord give us love for each other!

Thanks, Jessie.

Yes. They love being of import and needed. I believe they see themselves as the source of spirituality, not Christ through them.

Yes Jessie we should pray for God to give us love for each other! I love you said that! This is a challenge with some people. And to let those left in the dark to see our joy just from knowing the Lord minus our hardships.

I had one girl at work describe to me how she was so stressed and this and that has happened. She see's many of the similar dealings surrounding my life and said "I know you have to feel like this too. I know you have to be as stressed as I am." She said this in a tone as saying "Why aren't you as stressed as I am and why are you so happy? Why aren't you bound for a nervous break down."

This was probably a perfect moment for me to mention my relationship with Jesus but I held back. I felt I was to keep silent for some reason. This girl is a very touchy emotional one and so instead I just prayed for her at home. I think if I said anything about Jesus she would of gotten more upset. She knows I am a Cristian and that I don't like pushy people. So maybe she will see something without me saying anything. God will speak to her one way or the other. It frustrates her to see I am not frustrated in midst of my hardships. Well I am, but some how the Lord makes peace and joy in my heart. I can't go through a day without asking Him for such things. I can only handle this stress because He's in my life. Maybe she will see that some day.

I think deeds in the scripture points to just the simple act of acting in the way Jesus models it for us. I don't think deeds are always having to give something of material. I think it could also be our work ethic for example or praying for each other. Basically I think we owe it to Jesus to act and to not just sit there. I think people that sit there are hypocritical and lazy. I also think that God puts in our new life to want to try harder each time and to want to keep going. I feel the reason for this is because once we are saved through Jesus all we want to do is try to please Him because its all about Him. This is a very joyous thing; not a burden like I've noticed the world tries to perceive as it being.

Also I think that God puts certain tasks in our hearts that He wants us to do. If He does this I think He makes it so strong in our hearts we cannot ignore it. So for one to have faith and not act is like ignoring God too I would think.
