I have picked up more work at another building and it is called YMCA. Has anyone heard about it? It stands for Young Mens Christian Athletics. It is basically a big place that has about every gym type thing in it from weight rooms to basketball courts to rock climbing walls to swimming pools ect.

Like many things having that name Christian in it really bothers me. It seems they use that name to help sell their product. I don't see much anything having to do with Christianity in it and the people that run it sound horrible. The employees don't seem to have a very Christian attitude at all. So many times I have heard people refer to the upper management there as hypocrites. I have never met them though but they do sound quite unpleasant. And in the middle of all this they have a chapel where I guess people can go in and pray before they play their big game. Who needs a chapel to have a quick group prayer? Again another commercialized thing. Who ever owns it is sitting on some fat cash. Quite expensive for a membership.

If their prices are high then they might be using this name to market their product but if it was a symbolic fees then it seems like they are trying to do something good.
But you say " Quite expensive for a membership " So the point is far away from Jesus who said " for free you took , For free you give "
May Jesus be with you and pray for me.

a. baker...are you serious? YMCA is a world-wide organization. Where do you think the song by the Village People came from? ...Young Men's Christian Association. It started in the late 1800's and was intended to promote fitness for urban youth. It had it's roots in Christian principles. It never was exclusive, as it accepted members from all walks of life and faith. I had an active membership right up till I moved to the Bahamas. I believe there is even one Nassau.

By the way...YMCA is a non-profit organization, getting most of it's funding from social agencies such as United Way etc...Also some funding from municipalities as a way of promoting health of the citizens. The membership fees are highly subidized and dont reflect the real cost of actually operating and maintaining the place.

Here is a link (http://www.ymca.net/).

I use to be a member of a Y years ago and it was not expensive. There is one about three miles from me.

Is this one ripping off the Y name? Have a link or something to it to look at?

This one is about a $100 a month for a membership for a family of four (only includes certain things) and they claim to help people who have financial struggles to get cheaper memberships. But I don't see that at all. I know people who are struggling financially and tried and got denied. The management there is very rude and acts like they are better than everybody. Plus members have to pay extra just to do other things , for example just about all the classes they hold. One night they held a craft, swim and pizza dinner for families of four. It was $30 for each family that was a member and $40 for non members. Plus an extra fee if you signed up that day for it. Not a single bible in the whole place or any place with the name Jesus. Other local churches may stick pamphlets in there from time to time to visit their church but that is it. There is 2000 to 3000 people in and out of that place daily! They don't advertise their money going to any good except to help low income people get memberships. This building alone itself was $20 million to build. All recycle material and recycle material is expensive!

The whole family for $100 a month?...TAKE IT!

You gotta understand...it is not a church...it is a social agency...You should enroll your daughter as soon as possible for the swimming lessons.

Nothing is cheap but this is pretty cheap compared to most anywhere else.

I can tell you, from experience, their facilities, programs and such have a lot of overhead and incoming monies are way way down. All such programs are struggling.

No, it is too much for a struggling family. $100 might as well be a million for them. But unless they get donors it is just reality.

No excuse for being rude and it does not help the facility. So maybe a change or staff would help a lot with financial aid.

snooty, nasty demeanored people are a fact of life. I don't think it has anything to do with the YMCA per se.

But it is not good to have the general manager act like he is all high mighty and looks down on everyone. He is representing the company really. Yes I agree $100 may be a good deal considering but yes for a struggling family that is a monthly bill thats too high. A lady thats works with us said she tried to apply for something to help her get a cheaper membership for her family because she is low income and she was denied and makes about the same as me and my family but has another child to add to that. So that tells me I wouldn't get any aid in that either. According to the government for my family size my families wages are below the poverty line; so thats pretty low.

Being common attitudes is no excuse. Being majority does not make it right.

And yea, when tight $100 is a very big deal. I remember when $5 was tight at times.

O.K. as I was walking around the place last night and I noticed some pictures hanging with scripture on them. Thats was very nice and peaceful and it does make me feel a little better about having the title Christian on the place.

I found 2 bibles there. It's is looking much better to me other than some of the employees, but I suppose what do you expect in this world?...
