I had an insight because I’m going through some difficulties in my personal life and I’d like to share it in hopes that it may help encourage others.
We are God’s children, made for Him. He deigned us to have a deep yearning in our souls to have a relationship with Him. He did this because He wants us to choose Him and salvation. Because of the trials of this evil world, we are sometimes tricked and discouraged and loose sight of what we desire most. We know something is missing, but we don’t realize what. We may try to fill that void with relationships, drugs, food, work, or any number of things from which we seek joy and fulfillment. I know all this has been said before, and it is not the insight I was referring to. This is a prologue, if you will.
What I realized is that, as humans, we are afraid. We unknowingly deal with so much unnecessary fear in our lives. This fear comes from the panic we experience due to the lack of having our most primal need met. God is the only ultimate fulfillment of all of our basic, primal needs. The need to be safe, to be provided for, to be loved, to belong, to share and to grow are all needs we don’t realize we are struggling so desperately to fill. When we don’t have God as the absolute center of our lives, these fears throw our behaviors and personalities into disarray. A strong, happy person may become depressed. A moralistic person may pick up bad habits. Of course our spiritual enemy will take advantage of this situation and add his own tricks and lies.
But there is such good news! Our Savior, Jesus Christ has already defeated our enemy in our names and He has the power to make evil run, not walk, run away from His sisters and brothers. We must claim the name of Jesus over the lies and tricks of our enemy and we must let God’s peace and love fill our souls. I am reminded of words in a worship song I was listening to just this morning. Jeremy Camp was singing, “I will not be afraid. I will not be afraid. I will trust in You. I will trust in You. I will trust in You.”
