For anyone struggling with this here is some scripture for us to look to, to sort out people who may be deceiving in many different ways. It tells you to look at not just what the person claims but how they live and their actions and attitudes about things. God word says:
1 John 1:8-10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
1 John 2: 3-6 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Who ever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1 John 2: 18-19 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
1 John 3:4-6 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen him or known him.
1 John 3: 7-10 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

I also want to add if anyone is missing and does not know God you should read for yourself the book of Matthew (I would suggest the NIV version of the bible (most trusted version); also in this version where Jesus speaks is highlighted in red). It is rather short but it helps you to see the role God has modeled for us and it will help you to understand who God is. God misses the ones that don't know Him and He loves us all very much.
