This is a thread for me to ask questions about computer stuff and general technology
First off...What on earth is a cookie?
all the best....
A cookie is information that a Web site (http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci213352,00.html) puts on your hard disk (http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212227,00.html) so that it can remember something about you at a later time.

In simpliest terms, a cookie is a file that stores in the cache of your computer. Some sites have them and some don't.
It communicates from your computer to the site from which it came.
Some sites will not show unless you allow the cookie to install.
Some will show but, as with CTZ, you cannot login without them allowed since the server/computer link is required for security because both ends have security measures, thus must be allowed or the security will block your link to permission only files on the server.
Unless absolutely necessary, block cookies, since they can carry spyware and viruses. Or spyware and viruses can pretend to be cookies.
They are tiny transmitters of 2 way communications.

I read through much of the provided info and think I have the general gist of it. Sure is real technical for someone like me. Thanks for clearing tthat up for me. At the bottom where it shows visitors they usually show these visitors refered to as google spiders and slurp spiders and such. So these are a kind of cookie then? They are gathering info?
all the best...

A spider is a program that roams the web checking sites for informantion for the search engines. They gather the information you see when you do a search.
They are permitted or not by follow, no-follow and robot.txt files in the server programs, files and folders.

How exactly does one post a link? I want to expand a bit as to what I can do on the computer. It is getting boring just typing and sending. Thanks
all the best...
