As Fred Thompson officially hits the campaign trail, he's making a pitch to conservative Republicans nervous that the 2008 presidential race could lead to a Democratic president -- and even one named Clinton.

Thompson says he's the candidate who could prevent that from happening by campaigning on true conservative values.

"I still have the same common-sense conservative beliefs," Thompson (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/candidates/fred.thompson.html) said in Iowa, citing his belief in the "sanctity of life, lower taxes, less regulation, market economy, free competition, respect for private property rights, free and fair trade."


"If we stick with that, be successful and continue to be prosperous in this country," Americans will vote for the Republican ticket, he said.
