Hi folks, Kay-gee here. I'm here on the out-skirts of the Carribean, beginning to feel like I am living in America. American military base complete with big honkin' helicopter, American neighbors, American money and .......American groceries! This brings me to the point of the thread. Do Americans and Canadians have different taste-buds? Seems funny because we do after all, share a continent. Has corporate America somehow lost the recipes or have they dumbed down your food to make it more mass compliant? I admit to being a flavour junkie and I'm going to have to do something soon. My taste buds are falling asleep!
I'd be in the Canadian to Bahamas import business if shipping wasn't so darned expensive.
The following are some examples:
I've travelled in about half of the " lower 48". Never once had a decent cup of coffee. How do you folks stay alert enough to get anything done? ( mind you my travelling days were before Starbucks arrived) My hair is browner than the so-called "American roast"

Cheese! Your best Aged Cheddar is somewhere between our mild and medium.

Bread. I've eaten tastier cotton batten!

Bacon and sausages. What are you feeding your hogs? that bread?

Beer. (not a big partaker myself) pretty well water with some kind of amber colouring added.
Tea. Takes me 3 bags to do what one Canadian one will do. Maybe the good stuff is at the bottom of the Boston harbour. hee hee hee

Maple syrup. With all due respect to the lovely folks in Vermont, Canada is number one. We are so proud of it we put it on the flag! (Which you guys carried upside down at the Olympics) Next time, carry the Japanese one. Less confusing! hee hee hee

Just as an aside, why do American cigarettes smell like cigars?

Please join in with any contributions to the topic. Just remember Please, I'm having some fun here. Don't get all serious! thanks.......all the best.......

I am not an expert, but I do know there are differences.

In example, Canadian bacon is more of a baked ham than bacon.

Not knocking it, it is good. But it isn't what most would call bacon.

Coffee blends vary a ton. I don't like coffee, but I know that.

I you want stronger, either grind your own or get some Chickoree. That will light up your eyeballs.

Not sure how it compares, but when I lived in Scotland, years ago, I admit, they were much more into heavy creams and fats in many products.

Different flavor, for sure, I liked, but the saturated levels!

Beers? Not much of a drinker. I think I had one last year.

But I actually prefer lager first, which you cannot get the real thing here, as I far as I know, followed by a dark Pilsner or similar.

Miller is colored water.

Cheeses depend on what you want to pay. Scotland was cheaper, at that time, so we got mini wheels of the best stuff.

Here, that would be too expensive.

So, yea, I am very sure there are big differences.

Doesn't make one better or worse, just different due to the taste buds one develops.

Scotland too? wow, you get around.
On the subject of bacon, are you by any chance talking about an Oscar-Meyer product in a round pkg. like bologna. Says "Canadian style bacon"? Canada otta get a lawyer and sue! I'm talking about beautiful greasy, salty, sliced bacon. Usually smoked with good hard maple wood.

Well, many ways to do the real bacon.

Too thin and it is bad. Too thick it isn't crisp.

Varies all over as to how done. But some is fantastic.

Many kinds of smoked, syruped and otherwise.

As for Canadian bacon, you can keep it as described here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon). Back bacon is much better.

I have been away from it for a long time.

It use to be heavily subsidized to keep down food costs to the general population and encourage exporting.

I had to ask cause I can't help but notice how cheap your milk and dairy proucts are. How can farmers even produce it at thise prices? If there was some way to burn it in cars, we'd be laughing!

Here's a food mystery for you. Why is it that the hotter the country, the hotter they like their food? The colder the climate the less hot and spicy they like it. You would think it would be the other way around.

This is a message for any one on this sight who smokes. If you are planning to quit, let me tell you, you're in for a treat. Once the film of tar is dissipated from your tongue your taste-buds will again be exposed. ( this is usually a period of roughly two years) You will again taste the the food you are eating in an un-muffled way. I am having a love affair with food and the taste of it. Chocolate has become chocolatier, pepper, pepperier, sweet, sweeter and sour sourer! Confessions of a complete flavour junkie. Gonna start carrying around a small bottle of "Tabasco" just to kick up bland food a notch! Just wanted to share that. Quitting also has other benefits. For instance, being able to climb a flight of stairs without panting like a dog!

I think L&P is pretty universal. Had it in Scotland back in the 70s.

The L&P Worcestershire sauce is pretty much every where, But they make a steak sauce, in the same vein as A-1 and HP etc... Very rare. Only seen a couple of times, both times in the States. If I come across a source, I'm gonna grab a couple of cases. It tastes fabulous. Goes well with anything.

Absolutely no comparison!

We don't go to Pizza Hut, the pizzas are skimpy! And no where near the same taste.

I don't like Pizza Huts crust or cheese really. And the whole smoking thing yeah. I quit 2 weeks before New Years so I wouldn't have to make that my resolution. My resolution this year was a prayer to God to be how He wanted me to be and to make this year and the rest of my life devoted to Him. I haven't had a cigarette in 8mths. and 2wks. Why in the world am I still counting? Its in the past! My husband still smokes (outside only). But when I am in the car with him I feel dizzy from the second hand smoke. I can't believe I used to get enjoyment out of those nasty sticks! I like bland food mostly but I love spicy food and fish too. I like almost anything!

Hi a.baker counting the days is okay. For me its been 2674 days! Up here the Pizza Huts aren't too bad. As a chain goes, They are considered pretty good. Our hometown up here has a huge Italian population. It is considered to be the Italian food capital of the world (outside of Italy). Great authentic pizza is in abundance. The national chains have much difficulty establishing here. My two favourite foods in the world are hamburgers and pizza. Considering the age I'm getting to be, I know I should be watching myself and what I eat. I've been lucky. I'm not over weight. Gotta a spare tire though like most guys in my bracket. I like most stuff but I totally detest cucumbers. Can hardly sit at the same table with them. I like pickles though. Go figure! Why do you like bland food?

I like bland food because I live in a colder state... Ha Ha Ha. No I just grew up that way so I like it. I can cook basics but nothing too fancy is probably also why. I also found if I eat food with a lot of flavor than I won't eat veggies or fruit or bread because my taste for them disappears. Pizza Huts here are not that good but they only have Little Ceasers and such to compete with so they don't have to try very hard.

ew pizza hut and all those bread pizzas.

I like the old pizzas, thin crusts not eating a slice of bread with tomatoe sauce and stuff on it.

anyone remember shakeys pizza?

a.baker
08-06-2007, 10:21 AM
I like both kinds! I just don't like any food thats greasy though. Some people like to eat the skin on chicken... yuck! Or they don't trim the fat off of their steak... yuck! I just think Pizza Hut is super greasy. I have never heard of Shakeys. Is it a down south chain?

Jessie

they went out of business a long long time ago.

now we have abbys.

a.baker
08-06-2007, 11:35 PM
How would you home make a thin crispy crust pizza with a regular oven? Is it the way you mix the dough, the ingredients of the dough, the thickness of the dough as its spread onto the pan, or temp. of oven? Probably a few of those I am sure. If you know I might try it homemade.

Jessie
08-07-2007, 12:16 AM
thats a good question!

I do know the thinner ones like at abbys have cornmeal on the pan and it sure makes the crust taste good.

kaygee, our food is horrid anymore. does'nt even taste right either for the most part.

a.baker
08-07-2007, 10:26 AM
Maybe the cornmeal helps to evaporate the water. I know you can use it on wounds on animals to help stop the bleeding. Interesting.

An olive burger (only exists up north). Miracle whip or mayonnaise mixed with green olives (and onions optional). Put on top of burger like a sauce and add American cheese and lettuce. The best! A&W restaurants up here sell them as well. Mmmmm! I love black and green olives.

How does everyone like their pizzas too? I love taco pizza. Again a northern thing. They have it at Pizza Hut here.

Hello irparrack. Did you by any chance move from Canada? There is a very noticeable difference in the taste of food. Yeah, sausages are one of them. There is a brand out of northern USA called Johnsonville. They are getting really close. I guess USA has to skimp on sugar because of their little rift with Cuba! Ha ha

It's a long story with many twists and turns, but I will try to capsulize it. My mom-in-law is a born Bahamian. She inherited a huge chunk of real estate. They have a law that says children of natives can apply for Bahamian citizenship. So my wife has a citizen-ship now. She decided it would be wise to have a presence here, with all the holdings and such she will one day inherit. So we loaded up our stuff and moved here. Like that Clampetts moving to Beverly. Ha ha. I have a lot to learn about life in the tropics. It's a whole different world from Canada, geographically, socially etc... but I'm enjoying it. I guess one advantage to being childless, is that we are able to make drastic life changes like this quite easily. I simply sold my business in Toronto Canada, and came. I desire to start a small business like coffee shop or such, here on our island. That's pretty much it. You live so close, come on down for a visit some time. I think there's a flight outa Ft. Lauderdale for like a hundred bucks or something. PS the invitation is for any one on CTZ.

I think the candy here is very sweet. I forget where but they have fried candy bars, now whats up with that? Its a country were they have fried everything but I just can't remember where it is. At one fair here they had fried Oreo cookies. Weird. I like the elephant ears with cherries on it for fair food. Or cheese fries are very good!

kay-gee
09-27-2007, 10:21 AM
Why on earth would anyone fry a candy bar? Cicken, potatoes, fish yes, but a candy bar? They are decadent enough the way they are. Speaking of candy bars, you guys got some brands we don't have in Canada. For my two cents, there's too many varieties of Oreo cookies now. Hard to improve on the originals. You folks in Georgia know all about pecan pie. Now that is a sweet item. In Canada, we have butter tarts..mmmmm....with a glass of real cold milk. About the only time I drink straight milk. I have it on my Cap'n Crunch in the mornings. That's about it.
