I have had a few days off over the Christmas holidays and decided to do a little more OLD TEST reading . One of the books I read was ECCLESIASTES. I am so confused about this book . confused and very depressed . The only message I got out of it is that everything is truley meaningless . What the heck are we living for then . Why did he put us here if everything is so meaningless.
Its such a confusing book. One verse it says wisdom is nothing and then in another it says wisdom is everything , and the same with money nothing then everything . Have fun and enjoy then, whats the point . I dont get it. What kind of message am I supposed to get out of this?
I would be grateful for any help with this, Im really depressed and confused about it:(

The message is a bit cryptic.
He qualifies the statements as under Heaven, meaning not including Heavenly things or eternal things.
Gaining wisdom makes one more aware that ultimately all done on this earth for this earth will end and even the memory of it will one day fade. That Man is ultimately a foolish race as regards all its pursuits on this earth.
So, what does that leave? The eternal things that do not wear out, grow old or perish. The eternal things that are not forgotten. God and not this earth.
Things done for eternity don't really show up on this earth. But when this earth and our lives upon it are gone, what will be left? The eternal things laid up in Heaven with God.
So, the wise person understands they must do the temporary things of the earth because we are of the earth. But they also do the eternal things, not of this earth, that are not temporary.

Thank you for your reply I am still learning alot . But what a downer that book was . its like he was depressed when he wrote it . But I see what you are saying there are things we have to do to survive and get by but they are not the things that matter.
It was acctually through my own depression, that I started to seek the Lord , so this book kinda freaked me out a little its almost sounded like me about a year ago when I felt that there was nothing to live for . I guess it brought back old feelings and memories .
thanks again for you reply :):

It is a mixed blessings book.
On on hand, it says that wisdom gives truer understanding of this world and God. Which is often unpleasant.
On the other hand, it tells us it will end and in eternity never bother us again.
