Sam Brownback, 50, a fiscally conservative, pro-life, anti-gay marriage, evangelical Christian turned Roman Catholic, has announced his intention to challenge Senator John McCain and Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, for the 2008 Republican nomination. His supporters believe that they can exploit the differences between socially conservative Republicans and the two frontrunners.

“There is certainly room out there,” Brownback said in an interview. He had been encouraged, he said, by a warm reception in Iowa, whose caucuses traditionally provide the first indication of the favoured candidate: “I was in Iowa on Monday and people were very excited to see a person in the field they could identify with.”

The number of politicians who fancy their chances of winning the White House is swelling rapidly. Brownback formed a presidential exploratory committee last week, a necessary first step to financing a campaign.

The passion of Tom Monaghan: Pizza. God. Sam Brownback.

The Domino's pizza founder, one of the nation's richest and most controversial Roman Catholic philanthropists, is putting his money and influence into making Brownback, the Republican Kansas senator, the next president of the United States.

The former pizza magnate is advising the 2008 presidential exploratory committee for Brownback, a longtime social conservative who converted to Catholicism a few years ago. Monaghan, who declined an interview request, is expected to play a lead role in Catholics for Brownback.

General Pace told the Chicago Tribune Monday, “I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts.”

Senator Sam Brownback released a letter March 14 in support of General Peter Pace, to be circulated among his Senate colleagues for signatures. The letter states the signatories’ support for General Pace against criticism from media and activist groups, Christian Newswire reported March 14.

“We applaud General Pace for maintaining a personal commitment to moral principles. He has demonstrated great leadership during a very difficult time and he continues to do so today.,” the letter states.

“We should not expect someone as qualified, accomplished and articulate as General Pace to lack personal views on important moral issues. In fact, we should expect that anyone entrusted with such great responsibility will have strong moral views. We should be concerned if they do not have strong convictions on key issues.”

“The question is whether personal moral beliefs should disqualify an individual from positions of leadership in the U.S. military? We think not. General Pace's recent remarks do not deserve the criticism they have received.”

Isn't there a contradiction between saying one is so conservative and the becoming a Catholic?

Does not add up.

Look at fine examples of Catholic politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy and of course John Kerry.

Just goes to show: There is One Catholicism per Catholic.
