The US is losing in the court of public opinion.

Many adults in 20 countries are concerned about the effect of the United States in the world, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies for Maclean’s. 33 per cent of respondents believe the U.S. is the greatest threat to global stability among seven nations.

Iran is second on the list with 18 per cent, followed by China and Israel with 12 per cent, Iraq with 11 per cent, and North Korea with nine per cent. The survey was conducted before Oct. 9, when North Korea announced it had successfully carried out a test detonation of a nuclear weapon.

When respondents were asked to rank the single most threatening issue to global stability, American foreign policy topped the list with 26 per cent, followed by international terrorism with 25 per cent, Islamic extremism with 18 per cent, poverty and unemployment with eight per cent, and global warming with six per cent.

More than 40 per cent of respondents in Mexico, Spain, Russia, China, South Korea and Turkey think the U.S. is the most menacing country, while 51 per cent of respondents in Egypt and Saudi Arabia chose Israel. In addition, 83 per cent of Israelis, 32 per cent of Americans and 25 per cent of Italians mentioned Iran as a threat.
