My question to the room is do names have an effect on people. For exanmple a name such as Damion I was told means son of the devil, what kind of problem is this if there's any? I was also told that whatever is viewed on television can be dangerous? What is this danger that I'm told about, can this arm me spiritually?

Interesting question.

Names and titles do have an initial contact perception impact. Whether they correct or not is another issues.

And names do means things. But we don't always even know what our own names meant in the orginal.

Some take special names and title to project an impact. Others end up with names that have impacts not having a clue what they mean.

So, they have more impact if the person lives up to them for good or bad.

Most assuredly a lot of videos and movies have underlying messages. Some even add subliminals.

Not only to movies, but to advertising and such as well. Then, of course, there is backward masking of words into songs and such.

We do not to take care what we put into us. It does have effects.

And we do need to be careful how we project ourselves to others. Clothing, in example, can deliver power messages about us.

How do I effectively guard myself and families from these subliminal messages. I explain to friends and family members and it has fall on deaf ears. I told a young man who recently baptized that harry potter (the book) has demonic connotation to it but he refuses to believe it. I also gave him a list of other books and movies that can be unhealthy for his spiritual growth, but he is adamant in his own beliefs, how much more can I help him?

That is a big topic.

One needs to learn the Bible. Then take these issues a single point at a time and lay them out beside the Bible.

Trying to do all at once probably will get no where. But one single point at a time can work.

You've done what you can. The old expression "you can take a horse to water, but you can't force him to drink" comes to mind.

You can clutter your mind with things that are a direct sin against God (through entertainment, videos, movies, music, etc.). Doing so can hamper your spiritual growth and focus on the Lord. This happened to me.

What I'm going to tell you now is what I have had to do in my own life. It's not really advice, because not everyone needs to take the drastic measures that I took in order to free my mind, and to free me of other influences in my life.

I had to get away from television, radio, movies, etc. for a while. I had to reject any and all kind of entertainment that I knew broke the commandments of God. My mind was so cluttered and jumbled that I couldn't spend 5 minutes praying without being distracted by my fragmented thoughts. That is, if I prayed at all. I had plenty of time for other things, but not enough time for God.

Filling my head full of ungodly garbage, I would lay down to go to sleep, and my mind would race at 90 miles per hour. I couldn't read scripture at all without my mind fragmenting and filling up with everything I had seen and heard throughout the day or past days through things such as internet, television, radio, etc.

So, I got rid of it all. I had to. Ya know what? It worked!!! My mind slowed down, I was able to focus, and I was able to spend time praying without my mind fragmenting. Anything you clutter your mind with, especially if it is contrary to anything we find in the Word of God has a negative impact on us.

I don't commit adultery, so why pay money to go to the theater and watch someone else do it on the screen? I don't practice witchcraft, so why entertain myself with a movie full of witchcraft? Especially when we know it is against God.

Now I watch very little television. I watch the news, and dancing with the stars (rolling my eyes so hard they stick that way), and my radio is set to a wonderful Christian station which teaches the Word of God. I really enjoy that.

The Apostle Paul told us in the Philippians 4:8:

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Here is more scripture I use to help me:

1 Peter 1:13-16

13 Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,

15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."

I know I probably got off topic a little. Sorry about that.

Each one teach one, right? I had to lay down some strick guidelines with reading, I looove to read. ANYTHING I put my hands on i'll read, books magazines ads you name it! I read it! I was convinced that reading expands my knowledge and man was I expanding! I read novels more than my bible I never understood the bible but the novels man! Did I understand them, but I've grown these very books has become very distasteful to me, thank God for the Spirit of conviction. Movies I dont find pleasure in watching, I still read ( like newspapers, my bible of course historical stuffs also). I would endorse what you said 'mind being fragmented' I still struggle with praying- I forget at times what am praying about. How do I overcome this? Maybe both of us are straying from the point.

Actually, maybe we're not straying at all. This ties hand in hand with what you were saying.

I basically have to concentrate and focus when I get like that. Private time with the Lord exclusively is just that... private time with Him and nothing else but Him. If the radio is on, turn it off. If the tv is on, turn it off too. At least, that's what I have to do.

It's frustrating to pray and then realize you've spent the last ten minutes not praying, but thinking about other things.

I was trying last night with total meditation without interuption. I try to meditate on GOD'S goodness His wonders to perform, was my mind fragmented. I love the radio and it's always on, it's right by my bedside and it's glued there (just kiddin). But no matter where my bed turns to my radio is there. I try to put my cell on silent but I rarely turn it off, but I'll try to put it out for total privacy with GOD.
