A government subsidy on sexy underwear would cut divorce rates, boost birth rates and make Australia a happier nation, a Melbourne clothing manufacturer said Wednesday.

With 40 per cent of marriages now ending in divorce and a third of adult Australians without a partner, cutting the cost of crimson lace would save Canberra money in the long run, Leethal Fashion Accessories proprietor Gail Lee said.

“We spend millions urging people to give up smoking, drive without drinking and lose weight,” Turnbull said earlier this year. “We spend billions supporting single-parent families and the social consequences of family breakdown. But what do we do to promote marriage and discourage divorce?”

Turnbull bemoaned the fact that there are almost twice as many single mothers living on the dole as 20 years ago, and that single- parent households now make up one in 10 Australian families - double the rate 30 years ago.

“To insist the government has an obligation to support single parents, and mitigate the damage that results from the erosion of marriage, but do nothing to strengthen marriage itself, is myopic,” he said.
