In The Seven Myths of Gun Control, award-winning journalist and bestselling author Richard Poe cuts through the blizzard of anti-gun propaganda and uncovers the truth about guns, crime, and freedom.
He details the seven most common arguments used by gun prohibitionists, debunking each one with a wealth of statistical and legal data gleaned from top experts in the field of guns and gun rights.
You will discover that, contrary to myth, the availability of guns leads to less crime, not more; that guns do not pose a special threat to our children; and that the Second Amendment is as vital to the lives and liberty of modern Americans as it was in frontier times. You will also learn how the current drive to further regulate and even outlaw firearms is a point-blank assault not only on truth but on freedom as well.

Excellent! The anti-gun propoganda needs refuted.
It is rediculous!! :not:
Excellent! The anti-gun propoganda needs refuted.
I can remember when Texas was voting for concealed weapon permits and the liberals were all bunged up with rhetoric that it was going to be like gunfight in the OK Corral all over the state.
. . . they had real problems explaining why crime went down. . . .

Armed citizens stop crimes.
The more armed citizens you have, the lower your rate of violent crime -- criminals are stupid, but they're rational, and they don't want to get shot any more than you do.
En route, Lott's analysis of the data reveals additional points that are very interesting and may be slightly less intuitive. For instance:
Blacks benefit more from gun ownership than whites.
On average, black Americans live in worse neighborhoods with higher crime rates than white Americans. When laws permitting citizens to carry concealed firearms are introduced, crime rates fall more dramatically in those neighborhoods, and black Americans benefit disproportionately.
Yep, that's right. Gun control is racist.
Women benefit more from gun ownership than men.
Women's ownership of concealed weapon permits decreases the women's murder rate more than men's ownership decreases the men's rate. Women toting guns also significantly reduce the rape rate.
Amen, sister. Gun control is sexist, too.
Private gun ownership is cheap law enforcement.
I don't mean vigilantism -- I mean deterrence. Private gun ownership lowers more crime per dollar spent than almost any other crime reduction measure...and the gun owners bear virtually all of the cost.
And the list goes on. In addition to the statistical analysis (including abundant responses to academic and not-so-academic criticism), Lott recounts the reception of his initial paper on the subject, as well as the hardback edition of the book, and discusses the media mistreatment of school shootings and similar events.
The book is dense, but as statistics-driven sociology goes, quite readable. Go buy it today.
And then apply for your concealed weapon permit.

That has been the reality in a large number of places where gun carry and use laws were liberalized, not restricted heavily.
Criminals will always go for the safest place to hit.

Core:
Back when I was single and had $200 I didn't know what to do with, I signed up to be a life member of the NRA. As such, I get their magazine, The American Rifleman, and it has a column called 'The Armed Citizen'. That column relates examples of law-abiding citizens using firearms for personal protection.
Here's the introduction to the column:
Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances.
Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life, limb, or, in some cases, property.
If gun control worked to deter crime, Washington, D.C. and Mexico would be the most crime-free locales in the world.
. . . sadly they are the poster children for the failure of gun control.

Any restrictions, permits ect... are unconstitutional imo.
They have a permit law in my state now that requires you to pay for a gun training course before you can pay for the permit, show me where that`s constitutional.
A lot of antis are behind gun control which will be the first once begging for protection in a crises. :(

InTheWind:
I grew up in a world where seeing a 30:30 lever action and a cattle prod on the rifle rack of many pickups was common.
People need to understand that the second amendment is their only guarantee of the rest of them.
They have a permit law in my state now that requires you to pay for a gun training course before you can pay for the permit, show me where that`s constitutional.Demonstrating a miminum of ability and gun safety skills is a reasonable requirement.
A lot of antis are behind gun control which will be the first once begging for protection in a crises. Gun control is the darling of liberal one worlders . . .

In Bias Against Guns he [John R. Lott] does an admirable job of demonstrating how the press and television virtually always report shootings of children nationally, although such events (as he shows) are extremnely rare--for example, whereas 34 children under the age of six were accidentally shot in one year, in the entire nation, 43 were drowned in 5-gallon buckets!
He also looks at multiple shootings, where two or more people are shot by the same perpetrator, as in schools, restaurants, shopping malls and other public venues--acts of terrorism included. In this he looks not only at the United States, but also at Israel where such events are every day occurrences, and how the Israelis handle the problem, and how best to deter such events.
As he points out, the media almost never report any of the 2,500,000 cases where firearms are used for defense against criminal attack and dangerous animals.
As he says, brandishing a gun and thereby causing an attacker to flee is not news. When man bites dog, that is news but when dog bites man--a much more frequent event--that is NOT news.
Not only the press, but the government also--particularly under the administration of Bill Clinton--spent millions on advertising campaigns vilifying firearms and using spurious
and misleading facts and figures.
Polling organizations word their public polls in such a way that it seems the public is in favor of gun control, whereas the opposite is true. Never do they ask the question,"Does private possession of firearms, on balance, create more good than harm?"
And the latter, according to the statistics, is exactly the case. On balance, guns among the population do more good and stop far more violence from occurring than they cause.
The gun-control advocates, especially including the media, tend to use emotion-laden individual cases to make their point, but as Lott points out, the only responsible way to judge the situation, in a population of 275 million, is through the statistical approach, and to do a cost/benefit analysis.
In the case of privately owned firearms, the benefits hugely outnumber the the cost in lives, pain, and property. Furthermore, privately owned firearms are the only clear, effective deterrent to crime--more than longer, tougher sentencing laws, capital punishment, and certainly more than gun-control which has never worked, anywhere.
This is a fine book, and as with his last, More Guns Less Crime, is worth your time if you have an open mind. If, however, you have your mind made up that gun-control is the only answer to all of our problems of violence and you view any other side as "gun culture" propaganda, then you should pass on this one. It will give you ulcers.

far too many are too careless with guns, and they are I think the ones who
give liberals the firepower.
guns are not toys and people need to know how to use them properly.
ITW you are correct they will be the first begging for help.
too many need to get their heads outta the sand.
FIVE STEPS TO SELF-DEFENSE:
Judiasm tells us to "choose life." But we can't choose life if we're dead. That's obvious. We haven't even tried to choose life if we allow ourselves to be feeble, helpless, flaccid targets for those who hate us enough to kill us.
You CANNOT stop a vicious enemy by being nice to him, by reasoning with him, by appeasing him, by understanding him, or by catering to his desires. Reasonable tactics DO NOT WORK with unreasonable people.
You must be as tough as your enemy. You must be as ready to use violence as he is—although only in the cause of self-defense. Bullies can sense weakness; they single out the weak for attack. But bullies are also cowards who avoid strong targets. In this perilous world, we Jews are already targets. We must show that we are dangerous targets to attack.
Some say that meeting aggressive violence with defensive violence "lowers us to the level of our enemies." The opposite is true: If taking innocent life is one of the worst possible crimes (and sins), then saving innocent lives is surely one of the greatest virtues.
If you are a Jew who values life, you should take five specific steps to prepare for self-defense:
• Understand that police are under no legal obligation to protect you. Then take responsibility for your own defense.
• Learn to shoot, and teach your family members to shoot.
• Study Jewish law and traditions on self-defense.
• Learn the history of "gun control," and remember what happens to Jews when self-defense is against the law or when they put too much trust in government.
• Urge Jewish leaders to follow your example. Ask them to encourage all Jews to defend themselves against those who would beat us, burn our synagogues, torture our children, or kill us.

Yep. Choosing Life carries an obligation to defend it. Which sometimes requires taking a life.

I have always believed that the best way to learn anything in life is by following the sucessful examples of others. What better examples are there than real life ones? The book also gives good refutations on gun opponents' most popular beliefs:
A robber will not hurt you if you do exactly what he tells you to do.
Using guns as a self-defense weapon is a deployment of more than necessary force to stop a violent encounter. Martial arts and self-defense sprays should suffice in any violent confrontation
Silent alarms should be able to get law enforcement agents onto the scene of a crime in progress before anybody gets physically wounded. In other words, carrying a gun in a place of business is equivalent to trying to take the law into your own hands
Law enforcement agents are always here to protect you.
Buy this book and read for yourself about the burgular who breaks into the house of a sleeping woman and, without saying a word to her, pulls out a knife and begins to slash her face. The woman did not even have a chance to comprehend what is going on before there are two deep lacerations in her face.
The attacker was so strong that after the woman shot him four times, he still continues to beat her and cut her for about another hour. Ask yourself if the martial arts or pepper sprays would have been able to stop him if four .22 caliber bullets barely could. When did the police arrive? One hour after the struggle began.
Read about the jewerly store owner who quickly activates a silent alarm after seeing three men enter his store with shotguns. The first thing the robbers did was fire a shotgun shell into a nearby glass window. At this point, the store owner decided it was time to fight back.
Before the police arrived, there was already an intense gun battle. Had the owner not possessed guns, the only thing the police would find upon arrival would have been a pile of dead employees and their dead employer.
Buy this book and see why every smart and responsible citizen should be armed.
