By nature, people gel into social cliques, regardless of their walk in life. For instance, people frequently complain about cliques within local churches.
 How do we, as believers led by the Spirit, overcome this problem?

It is in our nature. We like being around people we are compatible with or have things in common with.
Is this what you are calling a clique?

Yes.

Is this not favoritism?

not nessecarily. if we put others down under us that are'nt what we like,
treat them with different standards then theres a problem.

If you gel together with people at the conclusion of others, and that clique feels, and acts more superior than their peers, especially to ridicule them, or hold them down in some way, then that is wrong.
As for cliques themselves....I am close with some people, and not others. I'm sure they feel the same way about me. However, I am kind to everyone... regardless of whether they are in my close circle of friends or not.

How do we, as believers led by the Spirit, overcome this problem?
If its a large problem I would suggest having more fellowships, and having people sit with people they do not know, or do not usally sit with. Have prayer time, study time, and the fellowship time all at the same time.
Ask your pastor to speak on the issue, and also on the issue of "I".
If people do not talk to me, I do not find this a problem. For one thing, I am there to worship God, not people. I do not need others in my church, they do not need me.
Its a plus when people do get along, but its not something I need personally.
If I am there for Jesus, thats all I need. IF the word of God is not taught there, and the holy spirit is not there, I leave.
If all the Word, and holy spirit is there, but not the "friendships" I stay, because it to me is not as important as God and his word.

Well you have to realize in life we have to set the example and not follow the example when it comes to the world, sometimes the clique is not always right and we as christians have a fear of standing alone and that should not be so. Everything that our saviour did he did it first knowing that his reward did not come from man and so in that he did not look for mans approval but Gods.
