Praying for cures: Healing rooms prescribe faith for what ails people

It seems an odd spot to come seeking miracles. Rich and Dottie Kanes' faith-healing ministry occupies a corner of a strip mall on Sample Road in Coral Springs, lodged between storefront businesses for chiropractic therapy, ultrasounds and radiology.
Their rented space -- a gray warren of fluorescent-lit rooms -- mimics the sterile, pseudo-comforts of a hospital waiting room. Beige couches line the lobby. A water cooler gurgles in the corner. A receptionist greets first-time visitors with a smile and a clipboard full of forms.
But on closer examination, the antiseptic atmosphere gives way to something slightly other- worldly. Framed certificates on the wall endorse the Kanes as pastors and healers, not physicians. The forms handed to visitors include an explicit disclaimer that no medical care will be given. Questionnaires call for a spiritual as well as a medical history.
