"Sir! No Sir!" (http://www.sirnosir.com/)

Is this movie history reinvention?

Complete reinvention.

As a Vet in the intelligence field from 69 to 73 there was no such upheavel in the military.

The marines I knew were very mad they were assigned to security duty on our stations and were not in Nam in combat.

It is garbage.

Yes. There were a ton of protestors. The draft dodgers either got their college deferments or fled to Canada or elsewhere.

We got out of uniform as fast as possible when we hit stateside due to the few radical elements that were physically aggressive and made it seem their numbers were a lot larger.

But Nam was no different. There were radical peace movements even in WWI and II very similar to the anti-Nam crowds. They thought we could peacefully find peace with Hitler and his ilk.

Do some research on Zoot Suiters and you will see what I mean.

I think your right core. My father was in that war too, and I asked him. He said he had never heard of it either.
