While not up to date in all aspects this is a very interesting site (http://www.discernment.org/articles/modern.htm) with some good information on it.

Go to the Contents page, link at the top of the page, for more content.

It is sad, but it is true. Some people want God only on their terms.
I have said before and I will say it agian, I have recieved the gift of tongues.
If I have the gift? Anyone can recieve the gift. It is a wonderful gift.
If someone doesn't want a particular gift; you won't recieve it.
The gifts of God are not passed. All of them are for the church until Christ returns for a spotless bride.
Which gift do you have?
Which gift do you desire?
Which gift do you need?
When do need it?
Quit reading the word of God to prove a point.
Seek to find what God is saying to you.
Someone may be in the flesh when they speak in tongues. But my goodness man? Are you gonna stomp the flame out, or blow on it?

Most assuredly God still gives gifts of the Spirit. Every saint has at least one per the Bible.
Quote: If someone doesn't want a particular gift; you won't recieve it.

This is the only point I will differ with you on.

God gifts us as he sees the use he will put us to. Not what we want, in particular.

True enough.
(1 Cor 14:1 NIV) Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
(1 Cor 14:12 NIV) So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

We don't all know which gifts we are endowed with.
But this passage seems to say we are to eagerly desire spiritual gifts, and to excel in gifts. The purpose being the building up or edification of the Church body.

Agree.

Not sure I would say excel. But be ready to use when needed.

My wife wanted me to post her testimony, These are her words and expierence.

I was 15 years old and had been saved for 2 years. I was on fire for God. Read, prayed and learned as much as I could. I listened intently to those teaching me about Christ and what was said in church. In that span of time God had spoken to me and said that “This year might be a little difficult. I am going to make some changes. I will take some things away.” Well, that year was difficult. God had gently prompted and asked me to give up many things, ideas , attitudes, beliefs, carnal ways. This included certain friends. I had reached a point after a year of being stripped and giving up these things that I just felt void of myself. I prayed, ”God I gave everything you asked, now what do I do?” Part of the life I knew was gone now.
The next day I went to a charismatic church service with a friend. While I was in the service God spoke to me and said “I am going to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.” I knew little about this baptism. Had heard people speak in tongues and thought it a very strange and a weird thing but after being stripped I wanted all God wanted to give me. Well, the church service ended and I wasn’t baptized in the Holy Spirit. I was even too afraid to tell anyone about what God had said. I was spending that night over at a girlfriend’s house. While I was there I heard my friend say to another friend, ”God told me Diana will be baptized in the HS tonight.” I was shocked, excited and frightened that God himself revealed that to them.
Well they prayed for me that night, and I was baptized in the HS. Yes, there was the manifestation of a prayer tongue. Which I was a little shy about expressing but with that I was given a supernatural understanding . Immediately different things I read and prayed came back to me. It played like a tape. I actually sat there and for a time just kept saying “That’s what that meant, oh that is what that meant” and on and on. The Bible was open to me in a new way. My prayer life flourished and prayer language flowed like a river from deep with in.
You can be skeptical about it but “A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument.” I am sorry for those who choose to miss this experience.
I want all of God there is.

(John 14:26 KJV) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

I am not skeptical the Baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs when one is born-again. I know it is because the Bible tells me so.

And experiences? Dangerous to assume all are from God in such things.

That is true.
The fruit would be the evidence of whether it is of God or not. We are to test all things. I don't take these things lightly. Jesus said you would know a tree by its fruit. That was the purpose of me telling the whole story, so that the fruit it produced would be clear.

Hmmmm. See my confusion here?

Saying born-again for two years. Acknowledging the Baptism occurs at repentance. But then say experiencing the Baptism evidenced by tongues two years later?

One or the other, not both. And the Bible says when born-again, not some separate experience.

Hello Mrs. TLIR http://www.christiantalkzone.net/archive/images/smiles/wave1.gif welcome to the board!

one thing I would like to add is that knowing something is going to happen before it happens is not always God.

my son had friends that were heavily into the occult.
last night he was telling me they would tell him certain things.
even to the point of having him call without his knowledge.

we must be really careful...
