Quote:God's Righteous Judgment
1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
Those in the Judge No One, Let the Holy Spirit Handle It, Unity at All Costs and such Camps will try to use this verse as proof of their doctrines.
But that is not what is going on here. This verse is aimed at a specific group of saints in Rome. The Jewish believers.
They have continued what Christ condemned the Pharisees for. That is judging others by their legalisms and perceived superiority while committing the sins themselves.
Quote:2Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?
To judge another in condemnation for what you do yourself brings God's correction or condemnation upon you as well.
Quote:4Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?
You cannot hold yourself superior to others receiving what you have been given. As if something about you is inherently superior.
Quote:5But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6God "will give to each person according to what he has done."[1]
There are many so-called Christians today in cults and false doctrines holding themselves up as God's chosen and so on.
There are Christians today following false doctrines and not what the Bible says.
Many of these will in judgment be thrown into the Lake of Fire for Eternity. Others will be as the Bible says like a man barely escaping a fire with his life. They will be expecting great honor and reward in Eternity but will in fact be among the least.
Quote:7To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
Doing what is right because it is right is doing it all for the right reasons. Such will be rewarded in addition to God's gift of eternal life.
Quote:8But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
Those who do it for self at a minimum will receive nothing beyond eternal life. Many will receive eternal damnation with punishments in accord to what they have done.
Quote:9There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;
Paul is telling the Jews that just as the Jews were first in blessings over the Gentiles they will also be first in punishment.
Quote:10but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11For God does not show favoritism.
Another barb at the Jews. Rewards are not greater for simply being a Jew.
Quote:12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law,
Aimed squarely at the Jews. They are told that even those without the Law are judged according to sin. Not according the being a Jew or having the Mosaic Law.
Quote:and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.
Further he is telling the Jews the Law is not only for the Jews. All who have access to the Law will be judged by the Law. All who have access to the Gospel will be judged by the Gospel.
Quote:13For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
God judges by the greatest revelation a person has access to.
Less revelation means fewer sin issues that can condemn. But also fewer opportunities for rewards.
Greater revelation means held accountable for more sin. But it also means greater opportunity for rewards.
